What is Somatic Movement?

Movement and somatic therapy focus on the connection between the mind and body to help individuals heal from emotional distress, trauma, or physical tension. This approach emphasizes how experiences, especially traumatic ones, are often stored in the body, manifesting as tension, discomfort, or other physical symptoms. Through intentional movement, breathwork, and body awareness exercises, these therapies aim to release that stored tension and bring greater awareness to how emotions and physical sensations are linked.

When using movement and somatic therapy in counseling at The Refuge Center, you can expect to engage in exercises that help you become more aware of bodily sensations, such as muscle tension, tightness, or energy shifts. Your counselor may guide you through movements or grounding techniques that allow you to release pent-up emotions and stress. This could involve gentle stretching, deep breathing, or more expressive forms of movement like dance, depending on your comfort level. The goal is to foster healing by allowing you to reconnect with your body, understand how it holds emotional experiences, and learn new ways to self-regulate and process difficult feelings. Over time, you may notice improvements in emotional resilience, stress management, and overall well-being.
